First Job-Shadow: High Plains Pork, Winslow, ILAs I traveled to Winslow, Illinois on a sunny day in May, I didn't know what my experience at High Plains Pork would involve. I have toured several farrow-to-wean and wean-to-finish farms and so I thought this would be a tour of yet, another hog farm. But I was wrong. While alongside another mentorship participant, we were given the most hands-on and educational experience possible.
Inside the Sow Barn While in the sow and gilt barns, we learned all about High Plain's breeding program. After getting a quick walk through of the barn, we jumped in and were able to artificially inseminate five gilts using a foam tip rod. Once again, keeping records was an important priority as we kept track of how many times and when each gilt was bred.
In the end, my first job shadow experience at High Plain's Pork was extremely informative and provided me with an in-depth opportunity to learn about large scale swine production and all it entails. I'd like to thank Becca and the whole crew at High Plains Pork for welcoming us into their farm as if we were one of their own.
